The compact MAHLE automatic filter system AF 173 is used for the extra-fine and fine filtration of a wide range of different low-viscosity liquids. The automatic filter AF 173 G with pulsating external pressure segment cleaning and integrated cyclone effect. MAHLE automatic filters are self-cleaning filters and necessitate no waste disposal. During optimum cleaning in-process the filtrate flow of the AF 173 type is neither interrupted nor noticeably reduced.

Principle of operation
Due to the integrated cyclone effect, by tangential flow of the immersion pipe, a pre-separation of coarse and heavy particles in particular, due to sedimentation in the collection cone, is facilitated. After an upward redirection of the flow, the liquid then streams inward through the MAHLE segment element. The defined separation of the residual particles takes place on the MAHLE filter material. The filtrate then flows out of the filter at the top, opposite the in-flow connection point; inlet and outlet nozzle are in-line arranged.

Once the differential pressure limit or the set interval has been reached, the segment element is turned and the cleaning valve is opened at the same time. The segments pass the gap between external pressure nozzle on the inside and the rinsing channel on the outside. The nozzle alternates between open and closed, pressure builds up in the pressure reservoir when the nozzle is closed tightly. Then, whenever it is opened, an outward blast of pressure cleans the deposits of particles from the filter material. The particles are trapped in the outside channel and discharged with only little liquid. As source for external pressure, e.g. the filtrate, pressurized by pump, can be used. Compressed air can also be used as source for pressure – in this case the expanding air will be force the filtrate in the segment compartments through the filter media for back-flushing. Due to the compressibility of the compressed air, the back-flushing effect is notably distinctive.

Due to the back-flushing in segments, a very high energy density in cleaning is possible and a long-lasting process-reliability is guaranteed, even with very fine filter media or problematical contaminations. One rotation is enough for cleaning all segments and lasts 7 sec. only. Particles, settled in the collection cone, can be drained when the machine is shut down, as well as during operation.

The automatic filter type AF 173 is part of the Vario series, which is protected by various patents. The MAHLE Vario series allows great flexibility in responding to a wide range of different filtration requirements by different cleaning systems and filter materials. Filter materials
Depending on filtration and cleaning behaviour of the suspensions, on viscosity and properties, as well as on size, condition and concentration of the particles or substances which occur, different types of filter media and principles can be chosen within the Vario series.

Within the automatic filter type AF 173, special multi-layered wired mesh of stainless steel is preferably used as filter media. The qualities of the separation efficiency are offered from 200 µm down to approx. 5 µm.

Materials
The housing of the automatic filter type AF 173 G is available in the materials modular cast iron GGG and in stainless steel cast 1.4581, internal materials are analogue designed.

Cleaning control
The cleaning process can be started by differential pressure gauge, via time intervals or by counting machine cycles.
